Mcclung, John William

journalist, author, philanthropist, was born Nov. 21, 1826, near Maysville, Ky. In 1855 he moved to St. Paul, Minn., where in 1869 he organized the first building association west of Chicago, anu managed it until his death on May 27, 1888. He was known as the father of these associations in the Northwest. During 1868-70 he was editor of the Pioneer, now the Pioneer Press; and was the author of a work entitled Minnesota as it is in 1870, which was a great success financially and otherwise. From 1871 ne was a member of the St. Paul Chamber of Commerce; was prominent in public affairs; and Como Park especially was the result of his first park agitation.
