Avery, Benjamin Parke

journalist, author, was born in 1829, in New York city. He was a Californian journalist who was appointed minister to China in 1874; and was the author of Californian Pictures. in Prose and Verse. He was one of the founders of the San Francisco Art association. He died on Nov. 8, 1875, in Pekin, China.

AVERY, CATHARINE HITCHCOCK TILDEN, educator, author, was born Dec. 13, 1844, in Monroe, Mich. In 1867 she graduated from the Framingham Normal school of Massachusetts; and attained success in educational work. In 1870 she was married to Dr. Leroy M.

Avery, the author of a series of textbooks on natural philosophy and chemistry. She is president of the East End Conversational club of Cleveland, Ohio; and has held high positions in various organizations of that city.
