Maury, Francis Fontaine

surgeon, journalist, was born Aug. 9, 1840, in Philadelphia, Pa. For two years he edited the Photographic Review of Medicine and Surgery, and he published numerous reports of medical and surgical He was a surgeon to Jefferson Medical College hospital, and the Philadelphia hospital, and during the civil war had charge for a time of an army hospital.

He died June 4, 1879, in Philadelphia, Pa. cases.

MAURY, MATTHEW FONTAINE, scientist, author, was born Jan. 14, 1806, in Virginia. He was a once famous scientist, for many years in charge of the hydrographical office at Washington, as well as of the naval observatory. During the civil war he entered the confederate service, and in 1868-73 was a professor in the Virginia Military institute at Lexington.

He was the author of Treatise on Navigation; Physical Geography of the Sea; Wind and Current Charts; Physical Geography for Schools; and The World We Live In. He died Feb. 1, 1873, in Lexington, Va.

MAURY, MRS. SARAH MYTTON (HUGHES), author, was born Nov. 1, 1808, in England. She was the author of Etchings from the Caracci; The English Woman in America: The Statesmen of America; and Progress of the Catholic Church in America. She died in October, 1849, in Virginia.
