Matz, Nicholas
bishop, was born April 6, 1850, in Alsace-Lorraine. In 1874 he was ordained priest and appointed assistant pastor of the cathedral of Denver; and he was transferred in 1877 to the pastorate of Georgetown, Col. After building a church, school, and hospital, which latter he placed under the charge of the Sisters of St. Joseph, he exchanged this parish for the new one of St. Anne's, East Denver. Here he labored with the same zeal until he was nominated in 1887 coadjutor of Bishop Machebeuf, of Colorado.
