Matthews, John
soldier, lawyer, jurist, congressman, governor. He was the first speaker of the South Carolina house of representatives of that state after the dissolution of the royal government in 1776. The same year he was associate justice of the supreme court; and from 1778 to 1782 he was a delegate to the continental congress. He was governor of South Carolina from 1782 to 1783; and in 1784, on the establishment of the court of equity, was appointed one of the judges. He died in November, 1802, ın Charleston.
