Martin, Joshua Lanier

lawyer, jurist, congressman, governor, was born Dec. 5, 1799, in Blount county, Tenn. He was elected a representative in the Alabama legislature in 1822; and was subsequently elected, successively, solicitor, circuit judge, and chancellor. In 1835 he was elected a representative from Alabama to the twenty-fourth congress; and was re-elected to the twenty-fifth congress. In 1845 he announced himself an independent candidate for governor of Alabama and was elected, serving until 1847. He died Nov. 2, 1856, in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
