Mangum, Willie Person

lawyer, jurist, congressman, United States senator, was born in 1792, in Orange county, N. C. He was elected to the North Carolina house of commons in 1818; and in 1819 was elected a judge of the superior court. From 1823 to 1826 he served as a representative in congress. He was elected a United States senator in 1831; reelected in 1841; re-elected for a third term of six years in 1847; and served from 1842 to 1845 as president pro tem. of the senate. In 1837 he received eleven electoral votes for president of the United States; and during the administration of President Tyler was president of the United States senate. He died Sept. 14, 1861, in Red Mount, N. C.
