Lindsley, John Berrien

soldier, physician, clergyman, educator, historian, author, was born Oct. 24, 1822, in Princeton, N. J. He attended the university of Nashville (of which his eminent father was president), from which institution he received the degrees of A. B., M. A.; and received his degree of medicine from the university of Pennsylvania. He then studied natural science for five years; and subsequently traveled extensively in Europe and America. In 1850 he commenced teaching medicine in Nashville, Tenn., where his life has been passed as educator and practical sanitarian. He served with distinction in the confederate army, and had charge of the numerous confederate hospitals in Nashville. For twenty-three years he was professor of chemistry and pharmacy in the medical department of the university of Nashville, of which institution he was dean of the faculty and one of its founders. This institution is now affiliated with the Vanderbilt university, of which he was chancellor. He is now professor of the State Medical university of Tennessee; was four years health officer of Nashville; and for the past fourteen years has been state health officer of Tennessee.

He is the author of Military Annals of Tennessee; and other works.

LAW- NATHANIEL LINDSLEY, RENCE, educator, was born Sept. 11, 1816, in Princeton, N. J. For many years he was professor of languages in Cumberland university, and subsequently founded Greenwood seminary. He was associated with Dr. Joseph E. Worcester in the preparation of the dictionary that bears his name, and had projected a great work to be entitled An Encyclo-Lexicon of the English Language. He died Oct. 10, 1868, in Lebanon, Tenn.
