Lawrence, William

merchant, state senator, congressman, was born Sept. 2, 1814, in Washington, Ohio. He served in the Ohio legislature in 1843; was a presidential elector in 1848; a member of the constitutional convention of Ohio in 1850 and 1851; and state senator in 1856 and 1857. He was elected a representative to the thirty-fifth congress.

Laws, Gilbert Lafayette

soldier, manufacturer, journalist, congressman, was born March 11, 1838, near Olney, Ill. In 1861 he enlisted in the fifth Wisconsin volunteers; was infantry, wounded in the battle of Williamsburgh in 1862. He was appointed register of the United States land office at McCook, Neb., in 1883, and served in that official capacity till 1886. He was elected secretary of state in 1886, and re-elected in 1888. He was elected to the fifty-first congress to fill a vacancy.

Lawson, Albert Gallatin

clergyman, author, was born June 5, 1842, in Poughkeepsie, N. Y. In 1866 he was elected chaplain and grand worthy patriarch of the state of New Jersey. He is the author of The Threefold Cord; Methods of Church Temperance Work; Temperance Literature; Ambition in the Ministry; and numerous other works.

Lawson, Alexander

engraver, was born Dec. 19, 1772, in Scotland. His first important works were four plates for Thomson's Seasons, executed for Thomas Dobson, bookseller, which attracted much favorable notice. He died Aug. 22, 1846, in Philadelphia, Pa.

Lawson, John D

merchant, gressman, was born Feb. 18, 1816, in Montgomery, N. Y. He was a merchant in New York for more than twenty-five years, and retired from business in 1868.

He was a delegate to the national republican conventions of 1868 and 1872; and was elected to the forty-third congress.

Lawson, Leonidas Moreau

educator, physician, author, was born Sept. 10, 1812, in Nicholas county, Ky. He was the earliest writer of acknowledged ability on medical subjects in the valley of the Mississippi. He published an edition of Dr. James Hope's Morbid Anatomy; and Practical Treatise on Phthisis Pulmonalis, which was highly praised, and became a standard both in the United States and abroad. He died Jan. 24, 1864, in Cincinnati, Ohio.
