Jewett, Sherman Skinner

foundryman, banker, was born Jan. 17, 1818, in Moravia, N. Y. He decided to confine his attention to the production of stoves of every description, a line of trade then in its infancy. The business rapidly increased until, in 1854, branch office and warehouse were opened in Chicago, branches in Detroit, Milwaukee, Denver and San Francisco a becoming necessary in due course of time.

He voted in 1880 in the electoral college for James A. Garfield for president of the United States. As one of the projectors of the elaborate system of public parks in the city of Buffalo in 1868, and as president of the park commissioners since 1879, he displayed his appreciation of an enterprise which has proved a general benefit.
