Ireland, John (Soldier lawyer jurist governor)

soldier, lawyer, jurist, governor, was born Jan. 1, 1827, in Hart county, Ky. In 1862 he entered the confederate army as a private soldier; served throughout the war, rising to the rank of lieutenant-colonel. In 1866 he was elected a delegate to the state constitutional convention of that year; and in the summer of the same year was elected judge of the second judicial district of Texas. In 1872 he was elected a representative in the state legislature; in 1873 was elected a state senator; and in 1875 was appointed an associate judge of the state supreme court. In 1882 he was unanimously nominated a candidate for governor of Texas and was elected; and in 1884 was renominated, and was reelected governor.
