Hill, Benjamin Harvey

lawyer, United States senator, congressman, author, was born Sept. 14, 1823, in Jasper county, Ga. In 1851 he was elected to the Georgia state legislature; was an unsuccessful candidate for congress in 1855, and for governor in 1857. He was again a representative in the state legislature in 1859 and1860; and was a presidential elector in 1861. In 1875 he was elected a representative from Georgia to the forty-fourth congress to fill a vacancy; and was reelected to the forty-fifth congress. He was elected a senator of the United States from Georgia for the term of six years from March 4, 1877. He was the author of Notes on the Situation; and Address to the People of Georgia. He died Aug. 19, 1882, in Atlanta, Ga.
