Hill, David Bennett
lawyer, journalist, governor, United States senator, was born Aug. 29, 1843, in Havana, N. Y.
He was appointed city attorney of Elmira; and in 1868 was a delegate to the democratic state convention. In 1870 he was elected a representative in the state legislature; was reelected in 1871.
In 1881 he was elected member of the common council of Elmira; and in 1882 a was elected mayor of Elmira. In the fall of the same year he was elected lieutenant-governor of New York; and in 1884 became governor of the state of New York. In 1886 he was elected governor for a full term of four years, and in 1891 was elected to the United States senate as a democrat.
