Herron, Francis J

merchant, soldier, was born Feb. 17, 1837, in Pittsburg, Pa. In 1856 he moved to Dubuque, Iowa, where he engaged in mercantile pursuits. In 1861 he organized and commanded the Governor Gray's; and served in the first and second Iowa regiments. He entered as a captain and attained the rank of major-general of volunteers. He took part in a score of battles and numerous skirmishes; and is prominently identified with the Grand Army of the Republic of Iowa and the United States. He has also contributed valuable articles to current publications.
