Hayes, John Lord
lawyer, author, was born April 13, 1812, in South Berwick, Maine. In 1861-65 he was chief clerk of the United States patent office, and in thè latter year he became secretary of the National association of Wool Manufacturers, which office he retained till his death. He was the author of The Iron Mines of Nova Scotia; Jackson's Vindication as the Discoverer of Anæsthetics; The Hudson Bay Question; The Protective Question Abroad and at Home; and Sheep Industry in the South. He died April 18, 1887, in Cambridge, Mass.
