Harlan, James (Merchant lawyer congressman)
merchant, lawyer, congressman, was born June 22, 1800, in Mercer county, Ky. In 1829 he was appointed prosecuting attorney for the circuit in which he resided, and held the office four years. In 1835 he was elected a representative in congress from Kentucky, and in 1837 was re-elected. From 1840 to 1844 he was secretary of the state of Kentucky; and in 1845 was elected to the lower branch of the legislature. In 1850-63 he was attorney general of that state. He died Feb. 18, 1863, in Frankfort, Ky.
