Harlan, James (Journalist lawyer college)

journalist, lawyer, college president, congressman, United States senator, was born Aug. 25, 1820, in Clarke county, Ill. He was superintendent of public instruction for Iowa in 1847; and was president of the Iowa Wesleyan university in 1853. He was elected a senator in congress from Iowa in 1855; and was reelected to the senate for the term ending in 1867. In 1865 he resigned his seat in the senate and entered upon his duties as secretary of the interior. In 1866 he was again re-elected to the senate for the term commencing in 1867 and ending in 1873. In 1869 he was appointed president of the Iowa university, and after leaving the senate in 1873 became proprietor and editor of the Washington Chronicle.
