Hale, Salma
journalist, lawyer, jurist, congressman, author, was born March 7, 1787, in Alstead, N. H. From 1812 to 1834, with the exception of a few years, he was clerk of the supreme court of Cheshire. He was a representative in congress from 1817 to 1819; and afterward practiced at the bar. He was a member of the legislature from 1823 to 1825; and secretary of the board of commissioners under the treaty of Ghent. He was the author of History of the United States; and Annals of Keene. He died Nov. 19, 1866, in Somerville, Mass.
HALE, MRS. SARAH JOSEPHA [BUELL], author, was born Oct. 24, 1788, in Newport, N. H. She was a once wellknown writer of Philadelphia who was editor of The Lady's Book for forty years. She was the author of Woman's Record, a large biographicaland critical work, and her most important.
