Harris, Isham Green

soldier, lawyer, congressman, governor, United States senator, was born Feb. 10, 1818, near Tullahoma , Tenn. He was elected a representative in the state legislature in 1847; and was elected a representative from Tennessee to the thirty-first and thirtysecond congresses. He moved to Memphis, Tenn.; and was elected governor in 1857, and re-elected in 1859 and 1861. He served three years in the confederate army as a staff officer; and was elected a United States senator from Tennessee for the term of six years from 1877; and was re-elected for the terms ending in 1889, 1895 and 1901.
