Grover, Lafayette
soldier, lawyer, congressman, governor, United States senator, born Nov. 29, 1823, in Bethel, Maine. In 1851 he was elected prosecuting attorney for the territory of Oregon; in 1852 was auditor of public accounts; served three years in the territorial legislature; and saw service in the Indian wars of Oregon. Having been an active member of the convention of 1857 to form a state constitution, he was subsequently elected the first representative in congress from the prospective state, and took his seat as such in 1859. In 1870 he was elected governor of Oregon, and re-elected in 1874; and resigned in 1877 to take his seat as a United States senator from Oregon for the term ending in 1883.
