Gosper, John J
soldier, orator, was born April 8, 1841, in Knox county, Ohio.
During the civil war he served gallantly in the union army as first lieutenant of the United States colored troops, and lost a leg in the war. He was president of the city council of Lincoln, Neb., and secretary of state of Nebraska in 1873. Gosper county, Neb., was named for him. In 1877 he was appointed by President Hayes to the secretaryship of Arizona territory, and served five years, most of the time as acting governor. He has been a member of the school board of Los Angeles, Cal.
