Gilbert, Sylvester
lawyer, jurist, congressman, was born in 1756 in Hebron, Conn. In 1780 he was a member of the general assembly, being the youngest member in the house; and in 1788 was appointed state's attorney for Tolland county, and filled that office twenty-one years. In 1807 he was appointed chief judge of the county court and judge of probate, which offices he held until 1825, with the exception of his term as representative in congress from Connecticut in 1818-19. In 1826 he was again elected to the legislature, and was then the oldest member in the house, to which body he had, from the year 1780, been re-elected thirty times.
He died in January, 1846.
