Giddings, Joshua Reed

lawyer, abolitionist, diplomat, congressman, author, was born Oct. 6, 1795, in Athens, Pa. He was elected to the Ohio legislature in 1826; was a representative in congress from Ohio from 1838 to 1859; and for many years recognized as one of the leaders of the antislavery party. In 1861 he was арpointed consul-general of British North America. He was the author of The Exiles of Florida; The Rebellion: its Authors and its Causes; Speeches in Congress; and Essays of Pacificus. He died May 27, 1864, in Montreal, Canada.
