Frye, William Pearce

lawyer, congressman, United States senator, was born Sept. 2, 1831, in Lewiston, Maine.

He served three terms as a member of the state legislature during 1861-67; was mayor of the city of Lewiston in 1866 and 1867, and was attorney general of the state of Maine during 1867-69. In 1864 he was a presidential elector; and was a delegate to the national republican conventions of 1872, 1876, and 1880. He was elected a representative to the fortysecond, forty-third, forty-fourth, fortysixth, and forty-seventh congresses as a republican. In 1881 he was elected to the United States senate to fill a vacancy; and was re-elected in 1883, in 1888, and again in 1895 for term ending in 1901.
