Fitts, James Harris

lawyer, banker, manufacturer, was born Oct. 12, 1830, near Jackson, Ala. He received his education at the university of Alabama. He became bank attorney of the Old State bank, a depository of the confederate state government. During 1865-68 he trustee of the university of Alabama. He has been treasurer of the diocese, trustee and treasurer of the bishop's fund of the diocese of Alabama; and for the past quarter of a century has been treasurer of the university of Alabama. He organized and was president of the Tuscaloosa Cotton mills, which manufactured the first colored cotton plaids made in the south; and in 1865 he established the banking house of J. H. Fitts and Company.
