Felch, Alpheus
lawyer, jurist, governor, United States senator, was born Sept. 28, 1806, in Limerick, Maine. He was a member of the Michigan state legislature in 1836 and 1837; was appointed bank commissioner of Michigan in 1838, and resigned in 1839; for a short time in 1842 was auditor general of the state, but relinquished that position for a seat on the bench of the supreme court of Michigan. In 1845 he was elected governor; resigned in 1847, and was elected a senator in congress for six years; and was a delegate to the Chicago convention of 1864. For many years he was professor of law in the university of Michigan.
