Hay, John
lawyer, statesman, poet, was born Oct. 8, 1838, in Salem, Ind. In 1861 he became Lincoln's private secretary, adjutant, and aide-de-camp during the civil war, and attained the rank of brevetted colonel. For five years he was an editorial writer on the New York Tribune, during 1870-75. He is now United States minister in London, England. He is the author of A Life of Abraham Lincoln; Pike County Ballads, and Other Poems; and Castilian Days, a volume of travels. Of his dialect poems, Jim Bludso and Little Breeches are the best known.
