Eustis, William
soldier, physician, congressman, governor, was born June 10, 1753, in Cambridge, Mass. At the beginning of the war he was appointed surgeon of a regiment, and afterwards hospital surgeon. At the termination of the war he commenced the practice of his profession in Boston. In 1800 he was elected a representative in congress from Massachusetts, serving until 1805. In 1809 he was appointed secretary of war by President Madison, and continued in office until 1813. In 1815 he was sent as ambassador to Holland. After his return he was a representative in congress from 1820 to 1823; and was chosen governor of Massachusetts in 1823. He died Feb. 6, 1825, in Boston, Mass.
