Elmore, Franklin Harper

soldier, lawyer, banker, United States senator, was born Jan. 16, 1799, in Laurens, S. C. He was a colonel of militia; and also a trustee of the South Carolina college. In 1822 he was elected solicitor of the southern circuit, and was continued in this office, by re-elections, until 1837, when he was elected to the house of representatives in congress, and served until 1839. He was in that year elected president of the bank of the State of South Carolina, which office he held till his appointment to the United States senate in 1850, to fill a vacancy. He died May 29, 1850, in Washington, D. C.
