Dyer, Alexander Brydie

soldier, was born Jan. 10, 1815, in Richmond, Va.

In 1837 he graduated from West Point; and for the following ten years performed garrison and ordnance in different parts of the country. For his services during the Mexican war he was brevetted first lieutenant and captain. In 1864 he was promoted to be chief of ordnance, with the rank of brigadier-general. And in 1865 he was brevetted major-general for faithful, meritorious and distinguished services. He held the position of chief of ordnance until his death, and during his incumbency he increased in many ways the efficiency of the service. He died May 20, 1874, in Washington, D. C.
