Durkee, Charles
merchant, congressman, United States senator, governor, was born Dec. 5, 1807, in Royalton, Vt. He was a merchant; removed to Wisconsin; and was elected to the legislature of that state in 1837 and 1838. He was a representative in congress in 1848 and 1850 from Wisconsin; and was a United States senator for six years, commencing in 1855.
He was a delegate to the peace congress of 1861; and in 1865 was appointed governor of Utah. He died Jan. 14, 1870, in Omaha, Neb.
