Drayton, William
soldier, congressman, was born Dec. 30, 1776, in St. Augustine, Fla. He was a captain in the South Carolina militia; in 1812 was commissioned a colonel in the United States army, and inspector-general in 1814. He assisted Generals Scott and Macomb in preparing a System of Infantry Tactics for the army. He was elected recorder of Charleston in 1819; and was a representative in congress from South Carolina from 1825 to 1833. He was chosen president of the United States bank in 1840. He died May 24, 1846, in Philadelphia, Pa.
