Doty, James Duane
jurist, congressman, governor, was born in 1799, in Salem, N. Y. He was a delegate to congress from the territory of Wisconsin from 1839 to 1841; from 1841 to 1844 was governor of Wisconsin; and for many years was United States judge for northern Michigan. He was also superintendent of Indian affairs; and was a representative in congress from the state of Wisconsin from 1849 to 1853. In 1864 he was appointed governor of Utah, of which territory he had previously been treasurer. He died in June, 1865, at Salt Lake City, Utah.
