Daniel, John Warwick

soldier, lawyer, United States senator, congressman, was born Sept. 5, 1842, in Lynchburg, Va. He entered the confederate army in 1861, and served throughout the civil war, rising to the rank of major and adjutant-general. In 1875 he was elected a state senator, and re-elected in 1879. In 1881 he resigned the office of state senator to accept the nomination was of the democratic party for governor of Virginia; but was defeated at the election. In 1884 he was elected a representative from Virginia to the forty-ninth congress. In 1887 he took his seat as a member of the United States senate, and re-elected for term ending in 1899.
