Connolly, James Austin

soldier, lawyer, congressman, was born March 8, 1843, in Newark, N. J. He entered the United States army in 1862 as a private in the one hundred and twenty-third Illinois volunteers, and was afterward captain, major , and brevet lieutenant-colonel. He served as a member of the Illinois house of representatives in 1873-75; and was United States attorney for the southern district of Illinois from 1876 to 1885 and again from 1889 to 1893. He was elected to the fifty-fourth and re-elected to the fifty-fifth congress as a republican.
