Colquitt, Alfred Holt

soldier, lawyer, United States senator, governor, was born April 20, 1824, in Walton county, Ga. He was a representative in congress from Georgia from 1853 to 1855; and was a presidential elector in 1860. He entered the confederate army as colonel, and, by distinguished gallantry, won promotion to the rank of major-general. He was elected governor of Georgia in 1876 by the largest majority ever received by a candidate in that state, and continued in office, by re-election, until 1882, when he was elected a senator of the United States from Georgia for the term of six years; and received the re-election in 1888 and served until 1895.
