Campbell, John Tyler

soldier, lawyer, orator, author, was born Sept. 9, 1843, in Bowling Green, Mo. He was educated in the common schools, and at the McGee college; and taught school. In 1861 he entered the union army and attained the rank of captain in the thirty-second regiment Missouri volunteer infantry. After the war he was elected prosecuting attorney; and in 1870 was corporation attorney of Kansas City, Mo.

Since 1874 he has practiced law in Santa Rosa, Cal.; and has served two sessions in the California state legislature, once as speaker of the house. He was appointed consul of the United States to New Zealand, and again appointed consul to China. He was president of the board of freeholders appointed to frame a charter for Santa Rosa. He stands high in Masonic circles. He has traveled extensively in China, Japan, and the south seas; has written and published numerous short stories; and delivered orations and public lectures.
