Collamer, Jacob
lawyer, jurist, United States senator, was born in 1792 in Troy, N. Y. He was a member of the state legislature, and from 1833 to 1841 was judge of the supreme court of Vermont; and in 1843 took his seat as a representative in congress from Vermont, serving by re-elections until 1849. In March of that year he was appointed postmastergeneral in the cabinet of President Taylor, and was soon afterward appointed on the supreme bench of his state, which office he held until 1854, when he was elected a senator in congress from Vermont for six years from 1855. In 1861 he was re-elected for the term ending in 1867. He died Nov. 8, 1865, in Woodstock, Vt.
