Colfax, Schuyler
journalist, vicepresident of the United States, was born March 23, 1823, in New York city. In 1850 he was a member of the state constitutional convention; in 1848 and 1852 a delegate to the whig national conventions of those years, and secretary to each; and was elected a representative from Indiana to the thirty-fourth congress, and to successive congresses, was including the fortieth, serving as chairman of the committee on postoffices, and as regent of the Smithsonian institution.
He was chosen speaker during the thirtyeighth congress, and was twice re-elected to the same position. In 1868 he was elected to the office of vice-president of the United States on the ticket with Gen.
Grant for president. After the close of his term he devoted himself to lecturing.
He died Jan. 13, 1885, in Mankato, Minn.
