Clendening, James H
lawyer, was born March 17, 1834, in Ogdensburg, N. Y.
He graduated from the Columbia law college and has attained prominence as an able lawyer of Fort Smith, Ark.
He was postmaster of his city for eight years; and for eight years president of the Fort Smith chamber of commerce; and in 1893 he served as a national commissioner to the World's Fair. He served with distinction during the civil war; enlisted from Iowa in 1862, and mustered out as lieutenant-colonel in 1865.
