Cleland, Thomas

clergyman, author, was born May 22, 1778, in Fairfax county, Va. He was a presbyterian clergyman of Kentucky, much inclined to controversy, who published Letters on Campbellism; The Socini-Arian Detected; and Unitarianism Unmasked. He died Jan. 31, 1858, in Fairfax county, Va.

Clemens, Sherrard

lawyer, congressman, was born April 28, 1826, in Wheeling, Va. He was elected a member of congress from 1852 to 1853, and was elected to the thirty-fifth and thirtysixth congresses.

Clements, Andrew J

physician, congressman, was born in 1832 in Jackson county, Tenn. He was elected a representative from Tennessee in the thirty-seventh congress, and in 1866 was elected to the legislature of Tennessee.

CLEMENTS, CHARLES WESLEY, merchant, legislator, was born July 22, 1851, near Church Hill, Md. He is a successful merchant of Crumpton, Md.; served with distinction as a member of the house of delegates of Maryland in 1894; and has always taken an active part in politics.

Clements, Emma Newbold

temperance reformer. She became greatly interested in temperance reform in 1884; has been the president of two local unions of the Woman's Christian Temperance union, and one of its national superintendents.

Clements, Isaac

soldier, lawyer, congressman, was born in 1837 in Franklin county, Ind. He entered the union army as second lieutenant of infantry in 1861, and remained in the service three years. He was appointed register in bankruptcy in June, 1867, and was elected to the forty-third congress as a republican.

Clements, Judson C

lawyer, congressman, was born Feb. 12, 1846, in Walker county, Ga. He was elected a representative in the state legislature in 1872 for the term of two years, and was re-elected in 1874. He was elected a state senator in 1877, and was elected a representative from Georgia to the fortyseventh, forty-eighth and forty-ninth congresses.

Clements, Newton N

merchant, congressman, was born Dec. 23, 1837, in Tuskaloosa county, Ala. He was president of the Tuskaloosa Manufacturing company, and was a representative in the legislature of Alabama in 1870-78. He was elected a representative from Alabama to the forty-sixth congress to fill a vacancy.

Clements, Samuel

educator, cler... gyman, was born Oct. 20, 1825, in Philadelphia, Pa. In 1870 he had the care for a year of a missionary training school; at the end of that time he was led to establish, near Philadelphia, the Cheltenham academy, a military school for boys, where hundreds have been educated for lives of usefulness. He died Dec. 9, 1888.

Clemmer, Mary

author, poet, was born in 1838. She was one of America's best newspaper correspondents; and the author of Memorial of Alice and Phœbe Cary, His Two Wives, a volume of poems.

She died in 1884.

Clendenen, David

congressman.

He was a representative in congress from Ohio from 1814 to 1815 to fill a vacancy; and again from 1815 to 1817.

Clendening, John

engineer, railroad manager, was born July 15, 1854, in Philadelphia, Pa. Since 1870 he has been in the railway service; and has filled numerous important positions. He is now roadmaster of the Southern Pacific company at San Francisco, Cal.; and also takes an active part in the public affairs of his city, county and state.

Clephane, James O

lawyer, inventor, was born Feb. 21, 1842, in Washington, D. C. In 1892 he was elected vicepresident of the Linotype Reporting and Printing company, and he devoted a large amount of capital and enterprise toward the development of the graphophone.
