Cheves, Langdon
lawyer, jurist, congressman, was born Sept. 17, 1776, in Rocky River, S. C. He was elected to the state legislature in 1808; was a presidential elector in 1809; and afterward attorney-general of the state. He was a representative in congress from South Carolina from 1811 to 1816, and was speaker during the second session of the thirteenth congress. He was also a commissioner of claims under the treaty of Ghent; judge of the court of common pleas from 1816 to 1819, and for a time president of the United States bank. He died June 25, 1857, in Columbia, S. C.
