Chapman, Isaac Newton

civil engineer, inventor, was born Dec. 10, 1838, in Lima, Ohio. He attended the public schools of his native county, and graduated from the Willamette university of Salem, Ore. In 1855-56 he served in the Indian wars of Oregon and Washington.

He has been United States deputy surveyor; city engineer of Alameda, Cal.; and has been successful as a surveyor of mines and mineral lands. He is the inventor of an automatic sewer flusher in use in Alameda and other cities.
