Cartwright, Peter
clergyman, author, was born Sept. 1, 1785, in Amherst county, Va. He was a famous methodist preacher of Illinois; and the author of Controversy with the Devil; Autobiography of Backwoods Preacher; and Fifty Years Presiding Elder.
He filled many high positions in his church, and attended all the important conventions.
He died Sept. 25, 1872, a near Pleasant Plains, Ill.
CARTWRIGHT, SAMUEL ADOLPHUS, physician, was born Nov. 30, 1793, in Fairfax county, Va. He removed to Natchez, Miss., where he labored for more than a quarter of a century, and served at one time under Gen. Jackson as surgeon. He removed to New Orleans in 1848, and in 1862 was appointed to improve the sanitary condition of the confederate soldiers near Port Hudson and Vicksburg. He died May 2, 1863, in Jackson, Miss.
