Candler, Allen D
soldier, educator, college president, state senator, congressman, was born Nov. 4, 1834, in Lumpkin county, Ga. He entered the confederate army as a private, and rose, through the intermediate grades, to the colonelcy of his regiment. He was president of Baily institute of Griffin, Ga., from 1866 to 1870. He was a member of the state house of representatives from 1872 to 1878; state senator from 1878 to 1880; and was elected a representative from Georgia to the forty-eighth, forty-ninth and fiftieth congresses as a democrat.
