Butler, Roderick R
soldier, lawyer, jurist, congressman, was born April 8, 1827, in Wytheville, Va. He was a justice of the peace; a major of the militia; a postmaster under President Fillmore; served two years in the state assembly and one in the state senate. He was a county judge; was a lieutenant-colonel during the rebellion; and was subsequently judge of the first judicial district of the state, holding the office from 1865 to 1867.
He was elected a representative from Tennessee to the fortieth, forty-first, forty-second, forty-third and forty-fifth congresses as a republican.
