Brooks, Horace
soldier, was born Aug. 14, 1814, in Boston, Mass. He served in the Seminole war of 1835-36, receiving the brevet of first lieutenant for gallantry and good conduct. For his services during the war he received two brevets-that of major and that of lieutenant-colonel. He was brevetted brigadier-general at the close of the war. From 1872 till 1877 he commanded the presidio at San Francisco, and on the latter date was retired from active service, being over sixty-two years of age. He died March 26, 1890, in Detroit, Mich.
