Brainard, John
clergyman, was born June 4, 1830, in Hartford, Conn. He has filled various pastorates in Connecticut and Maryland; and in 1863 accepted the rectorship at St. Peter's of Auburn, N. Y.
BRAINARD, JOHN GARDINER CAL- KINS, journalist, poet, was born Oct. 21, 1796, in New London, Conn. He was for a time editor of the Connecticut Mirror, and produced a volume of poems. His Falls of Niagara, written while the printer's boy was waiting for his regular contribution to the paper, is generally considered the best short poem written on that subject, and is one of the gems of American literature. He died Sept. 26, 1828, in New London, Conn.
