Boyle, Jeremiah Tilford

soldier, lawyer, military governor, was born May 22, 1818, in Mercer county, Ky. In 1849, he advocated with great zeal the emancipation of the slaves. For meritorious conduct on the field in 1862 he was promoted brigadier-general. He was soon after placed in command of the department of Kentucky, assuming the direction of military affairs in the state, and during 1862-64 was military governor of Kentucky. He was president of and organized the original company, and under his direction the first street railway was built in Louisville, of which he was president. He died July 28, 1871, in Louisville, Ky.
