He was a leader of new school presbyterian thought and an able scriptural commentator. He was a clergyman of Philadelphia, and was at one time tried for heresy. He was the author of Notes on the New Testament; Scriptural Views of Slavery; The Atonement; Life at Three Score; Prayers for Worship; Family and Evidences of Christianity in the Nineteenth Century. He died Dec. , 1870, in Philadelphia, Pa.
